Brand Strategy vs. Brand Design
One decides what the business means. The other decides how that meaning looks. You need both, in that order.
Two different jobs
Brand strategy decides what the business means, who it serves and what it refuses to be. Brand design decides how that meaning looks and feels. Design without strategy is decoration; strategy without design never reaches anyone.
Order matters
When design comes first, every review becomes a matter of taste. When strategy comes first, decisions can be judged against something: does this express the position we agreed on?
What good strategy produces
A position, an audience, a message hierarchy and a set of guardrails — written plainly enough that a new hire can use them without a workshop.
What good design produces
A system rather than a set of files: type, colour, imagery, layout and motion rules that stay coherent as the business grows.
